This week the class will be working on many new things.

Reading - Readers think and talk about books with others, reading with partners.
Writing - Writing from their emotions, staying on 1 topic and stretching out their stories.  Nouns will also be focused on.
Math - Addition Strategies to help with speed and accuracy of math facts.

Home/School Connections:
1.  Reading: Have students create a quiet reading environment at home for their nightly homework.  This may be a quiet space in their bedroom or a comfy hiding place just for them.  Partner read with your chil
2.  Writing: Have your child write about a time they felt _____(add in an emotion).  Have them use sequencing/transition words to move through his/her story.  Focus his/her writing to one topic.  Examples include his/her birthday party, a holiday, a special family trip, vacation, the day they got a pet, etc.  See if your child can circle all the nouns in his/her story.
3.  Math: Use Portland's Home Connect website to practice Math Facts in a Flash.

Math Facts in a Flash

Renaissance Home Connect improves the school-to-home connection by allowing parents and students to log in to a Web site and view the student’s math practice and progress towards goals (reading progress in the upper grades). Access to online results promotes discussion between parents and students, which motivates students and can make math practice even more effective.  In addition, parents can specify up to six email addresses to receive automatic updates in English or Spanish on their student’s math progress.

Unit 1 in writing is called How Writers Work.   In this unit we discuss where writers get their ideas from, the process writers go through, and how to write our ideas down in our journals.  Students have worked in writing.  Check out some of our pictures below.  We are writing in our journals.

Home-School Connection:  Have your child keep a journal at home.  He/she can write entries about their day, how they are feeling, or a special event in their life like a birthday party.

As students begin second grade, they are given the chance to "build a reading community."   Students have discussed what they need in order to have the best reading environment and how readers stay focused.  At the end of this unit we will celebrate what good readers they have become by creating "Good Readers..." posters which will proudly be displayed around the school.

We learned that writers have a special spot to keep all of their ideas.  We call our page a "jot page."  We wrote all of our ideas on our jot pages.  Some of the ideas were swimming, gymnastics, art, and karate.  Then, we chose one to write about.  If we were finished, then we could pick another idea to write about.  If we were not finished, we are going to keep writing about it next writer's workshop.

Today we learned about our BUGS.  Our BUGS are on our behavior chart.  We start on Great everyday.  There are other colors like yellow, red, and white.  If you get a warning and don't listen you have to move your BUG to one of those colors.  Once we move our BUG down the chart, we can't move it back up.  We get a BUG ticket at the end of the day if are on great or wow!  You get 2 BUG tickets if you are on wow! and 1 BUG ticket if you are on great.  When you earn 10 BUG tickets, you can earn a prize from the prize box.  East night, you will be able to see our behavior calendar.  Please initial each night to let Mrs. Raines know you saw it.  Look for the calendars in our folders tomorrow!
